New Initiative: Toi Toi Manawa

Toi Toi Manawa is a program that provides a learning environment for young adults who want to explore and develop their passion.

This 46 week program (30/01/12 – 14/12/12) opens a space for 8 young adults to gain skills by researching and developing different components of sustainable living, building an eco dwelling, and focusing on developing an individual project. The program is based on R. Wlodkowski’s model and encourages self-directed learning.

A broad understanding of permaculture design, organic gardening, health and nutrition, livestock and business management will be gained. By bringing in guest speakers and teachers, young adults, as a group, will be able to actively apply these topics into their daily life during the program.

In the program there is a main focus on individual projects. This allows them to have the time and resources to research a chosen field of interest, which is supported by a two week internship. During the year it will be encouraged to start developing a sustainable business that supports this lifestyle.
Discussions will be held on how these businesses can work together.

As a group the young adults will research different sustainable eco-building techniques and technologies. They will participate in the planning and preparation of the house design by having input with the professionals involved. The young adults will then take part in the practical aspect of the building.

The program will offer additional topics such as discussion forums, practical gardening, health and fitness, communication (to name a few), to help create a diversified and balanced lifestyle. The model of the program allows the young adults to have input into the content through regular review and feedback.

The big picture for the program is to create a centre that gathers and shares information that supports innovative research and development.

Being Well: Ōtautahi Summer Youth Gathering 2012

Being Well: Ōtautahi Summer Youth Gathering is on!

The Gathering is a five day event run by youth volunteers for young people, aged 18 – 35.

The theme of the Gathering is Being Well, a very holistic exploration of health. We will explore being well individually, being well in relationship with others, and being well in relationship to the earth. This will include biography work, compassionate communication, flax weaving and biodynamic/organic gardening. We will also have some stimulating presentations from guest speakers.

Throughout the five day event there will be space for participants to share ideas, skills and interests in a relaxed environment.
